Fix campaign traffic appearing as direct instead of a named campaign
By Gistmax Tutorials · 2026-11-04
A newsletter receives clicks, but the campaign report shows little attributable traffic. A missing label does not automatically mean the clicks were fake or the analytics service is broken.
Why this happens
Campaign parameters can be absent, inconsistent or removed during redirects. Consent choices and different attribution scopes can also limit what appears in a report.
Step-by-step solution
1. Open the exact link from the delivered message, including the tracking redirect. Record the final landing URL and confirm that its campaign query parameters survive.
2. Use consistent utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign values. Build the URL with a URL library rather than manually adding a second question mark.
3. With appropriate consent, inspect a test visit in analytics debugging tools. Compare the correct session-scoped campaign report after processing rather than expecting every report to match immediately.
Worked example
A controlled link could use utm_source=newsletter, utm_medium=email and utm_campaign=november_tutorials. Use an anonymous test visit; never put an email address or access token in a campaign URL.
Verify the fix
The final landing URL should retain the three labels, and the test event should contain the expected campaign context. If parameters survive but attribution differs, inspect report scope and consent state next.
Prevent a repeat
Keep a campaign naming register and test links after the email platform rewrites them. Do not use campaign tags on internal navigation links.
