Troubleshoot AI API rate limits without a retry storm
By Gistmax Tutorials · 2026-11-04
A batch job receives HTTP 429 and immediately retries every failed request. The queue grows, requests collide again and useful work slows further.
Why this happens
Rate limits can apply to request volume or tokens over time. Some quota or billing failures need account changes and will not disappear through rapid retries.
Step-by-step solution
1. Read the provider’s error body and rate-limit headers. Distinguish a temporary limit from exhausted quota or an account restriction.
2. Use a bounded retry policy with exponential backoff and jitter for retryable failures. Honour Retry-After when the service provides it.
3. Reduce concurrency and token demand, and record a request identifier for investigation. Stop after a defined retry budget and surface the failure to the job owner.
Worked example
A worker can retry a temporary failure after roughly 1, 2 and 4 seconds with random jitter, then mark the job for later review. Those values are an illustrative policy, not a provider guarantee.
Verify the fix
Simulate several 429 responses and confirm that concurrency remains bounded and the job eventually succeeds or stops clearly. Ensure the retry does not repeat a downstream side effect.
Prevent a repeat
Use a shared limiter across workers rather than independent unlimited retries. Monitor sustained throttling before increasing traffic.
