A server receives an authentication or permission error although the developer recently added an API key. Printing the entire environment is an unsafe and unnecessary debugging shortcut.

Why this happens

The running process may not have reloaded its environment, the key may belong to another project, or the requested resource may not be available to that account. Authentication and resource permission errors are not interchangeable.

Step-by-step solution

1. Inspect the HTTP status and provider error code. Verify the expected environment variable is present without printing its value.

2. Restart the relevant server process after configuration changes. Confirm the endpoint, project and model resource match the credential’s intended scope.

3. If the key is revoked or exposed, replace it through the provider’s secure console and update server-side configuration. Keep it out of web and mobile bundles.

Worked example

A health check can report API credential configured: true while keeping the key hidden. It should not return the secret, its full request headers or an environment dump to the browser.

Verify the fix

Run a minimal authorised request from the backend. Confirm that a deliberately missing credential produces a controlled configuration error rather than leaking diagnostic secrets.

Prevent a repeat

Separate development and production credentials and use least privilege. Never solve a server authentication problem by embedding the key in client code.
