Fix a React effect that repeatedly fetches the same data
By Gistmax Tutorials · 2026-11-04
A component sends requests continuously and becomes sluggish. Updating state inside the effect triggers another render, which recreates a dependency and starts the cycle again.
Why this happens
Effects rerun when their dependencies change. An object or function created during every render has a new identity, even when its contents appear unchanged.
Step-by-step solution
1. Inspect which dependency changes between renders. Separate the actual request inputs from values created only to organise code.
2. Move request-specific object construction inside the effect or stabilise a genuinely shared dependency. Keep all reactive inputs declared rather than silencing the dependency checker.
3. Add cleanup for superseded requests and avoid setting state to a fresh equivalent object unnecessarily. Distinguish a true loop from development-only effect checks.
Worked example
If the request only depends on storyId, build the request options inside an effect whose dependency is storyId. Do not put a newly created options object in the dependency list merely for convenience.
Verify the fix
Change the identifier once and confirm the UI settles after the expected request lifecycle. Unrelated UI updates should not continuously refetch the same resource.
Prevent a repeat
Use a dedicated data-fetching abstraction when the application needs caching and deduplication. Preserve cleanup semantics instead of adding a flag that masks the underlying dependency issue.
