Occasional writes fail while several requests update records at once. Restarting the server may temporarily clear the symptom but does not explain the contention.

Why this happens

SQLite coordinates concurrent access and permits only one writer at a time. Long transactions, abandoned connections and slow external work inside a transaction increase the chance of lock contention.

Step-by-step solution

1. Find the transaction holding the write lock and measure its duration. Keep network calls and heavy processing outside the database transaction.

2. Use short atomic writes, close connections correctly and set a reasonable busy timeout. Review whether WAL mode suits the deployment and filesystem.

3. Retry only operations that are safe to repeat, with a bounded policy. If sustained concurrent writes exceed the design, evaluate a server database.

Worked example

A story approval transaction should update publication state quickly. Sending social-media requests while holding that database transaction can block unrelated writers for seconds or longer.

Verify the fix

Run concurrent test writes and confirm they either complete or return a controlled retryable result. Verify database integrity after changing transaction handling.

Prevent a repeat

Do not delete journal files or the database to clear a lock. Keep backups and use storage that supports the locking behaviour SQLite requires.
