Fix Expo dependency versions that do not match the SDK
By Gistmax Tutorials · 2026-11-04
An app starts failing after a package is upgraded independently. The dependency may be valid in general but incompatible with the Expo and React Native versions in this project.
Why this happens
Native packages and framework versions form a compatibility set. Installing the newest version of every package does not guarantee a working application.
Step-by-step solution
1. Run the project’s diagnostic tooling and inspect the reported compatibility differences. Keep the current lockfile before making changes.
2. Use npx expo install --check to inspect expected versions and apply compatible fixes deliberately. Review package-specific migration instructions.
3. Reinstall consistently with the selected package manager and rebuild native binaries when required. Test the affected feature in a release-like build.
Worked example
Use npx expo-doctor to collect project diagnostics, then address each relevant finding. Do not delete every lockfile as the first troubleshooting step, because that removes useful reproducibility information.
Verify the fix
Diagnostics should no longer report the targeted mismatch, and the original failing feature should work. A clean diagnostic report does not replace functional testing.
Prevent a repeat
Upgrade the SDK through a planned migration and keep one package-manager lockfile. Avoid mixing unrelated dependency upgrades into a bug fix.
