Fix React Native state updates that do not refresh the screen
By Gistmax Tutorials · 2026-11-04
Tapping a saved-story button changes an array in memory, but the list does not reliably update. Direct mutation makes it difficult for React to recognise the intended state transition.
Why this happens
React state should be treated as immutable. Mutating an existing object and passing the same reference back can obscure changes and cause stale rendering behaviour.
Step-by-step solution
1. Find assignments that modify existing state arrays or nested objects. Replace them with new values derived from the previous state.
2. Use the functional setter when the next state depends on the previous one. Update only the targeted item while retaining stable identifiers.
3. Check that list components receive changed data and any required extra rendering dependencies.
Worked example
// Inside a component with setStories from useState:
setStories(previous => previous.map(story =>
story.id === selectedId ? { ...story, saved: !story.saved } : story
));Verify the fix
Toggle one story and confirm only that story changes. Repeat quickly and ensure the final state reflects every intended interaction rather than a stale captured value.
Prevent a repeat
Keep state updates small and predictable. Avoid using array indices as long-lived identifiers when items can be reordered or removed.
