A web application times out connecting to its database while the database console shows Available. Availability does not prove that the application’s network path or credentials are correct.

Why this happens

Endpoint, port, security groups, routing, DNS and TLS configuration all affect connectivity. A network timeout and a database authentication rejection require different fixes.

Step-by-step solution

1. Confirm the endpoint, engine port and database name from the intended environment. Avoid hardcoding an old resolved IP address.

2. Trace connectivity from the application’s actual network location. Permit the appropriate application security group or approved source rather than making the database broadly public.

3. After connectivity succeeds, verify credentials, TLS requirements and connection-pool limits. Retrieve secrets through the deployment’s approved mechanism.

Worked example

If the application runs in a different VPC, a security-group change alone may not provide routing. Establish the intended private connectivity design before changing authentication settings.

Verify the fix

Run a minimal connection and harmless query from the application environment. Check that pool connections are released and that an invalid credential fails distinctly.

Prevent a repeat

Monitor connection counts and keep endpoint and secret rotation configuration separate from application code. Do not expose the database publicly as a generic troubleshooting shortcut.
