A deployment ends in CREATE_FAILED or rollback. Repeating the same deployment without reading the first failing resource usually reproduces the same problem.

Why this happens

The root failure may be a permission, quota, invalid property or dependency issue. Later failures often reflect rollback or dependency effects rather than independent defects.

Step-by-step solution

1. Inspect stack events in time order and locate the first meaningful resource failure. Record its logical ID and status reason.

2. Compare the template and parameters with that resource’s requirements. Check the deployment role and account limits relevant to the specific error.

3. Correct the cause and choose the supported update or recovery path for the stack’s current state. Review data-retention behaviour before deleting or replacing resources.

Worked example

If a bucket name is already taken, retrying unchanged cannot make the name available. Correct the naming strategy rather than repeatedly recreating unrelated resources.

Verify the fix

Review the resulting change set where appropriate and confirm the stack reaches its expected complete state. Verify important resources and application behaviour after deployment.

Prevent a repeat

Keep templates under version control, validate parameters and use retention policies deliberately for persistent data. Never delete a stack casually to clear an unexplained error.
